Diversity and Inclusion

The CAFC recognizes that diversity, inclusion, racial and gender equity issues are being raised within fire services and about fire services across the country.  It is our goal to have the fire service mirror the diversity we see in all people of our country.

This year, we were proud to see Chief Keri Martens as the first female elected to the CAFC’s Board of Directors.

We know that a growing number of Diversity & Inclusion (DI) issues are being identified across Canada and there are increasing discussions between organizations about how to address these issues.

We recognize that to date, efforts to identify and remove barriers to diversity, inclusion and racial and gender equality are being undertaken on an ad hoc and disparate basis by various fire agencies; and that no national, strategic, or coordinated effort exists. Despite the fact that these challenges span the country and the fire service as a whole, there are no mechanisms for fire services to discuss, address, or mutually support each other in achieving equity and inclusion goals.

The CAFC will provide leadership around this issue for the Canadian Fire Service and to elevate the Diversity and Inclusion discussion to a national level on two fronts:

  1. To support the workplace psychological health and safety of the fire service by being a valued sounding board for the CAFC Board related to inclusive and respectful workplace initiatives.
  2.  To support the fire service by assisting with the cultural competency of the fire service to encourage the effective provision of fire services that are sensitive to the diverse communities we serve and compliant with Human Rights in Canada.

In order to further the discussion about Diversity and Inclusion, the CAFC has created the Diversity and Inclusion Committee.  The foci for 2018 is on:

  1. Gender: We have also launched the Female Fire Chiefs Network to support and encourage female fire chiefs and company offers. Check out the page here.
  2. Aboriginal
  3. Human rights issues.
